How often do you see the blessings in your circumstances?
When was the last time you expressed your genuine appreciation for another individual?
When was the last time you felt appreciated?
What did that feel like?
As we are in the midst of the hectic holiday season, we often become so preoccupied with responsibilities, accommodations, and to-do lists, that the essence and beauty of the season is unfortunately missed and gone astray in a blur.
So what can we do to pause and enjoy this time of the year?
We can give THANKS, abundantly.
According to Martin Seligman, founder of Positive Psychology, expressing gratitude can make you a happier person. Psychological studies have shown that gratitude positively correlates with joy, happiness, and life satisfaction.
Gratitude can change negative mental scripts of worry, self-doubt, and anxiety into a healthier focus of love and contentment.
This exercise is called the Gratitude Letter or Gratitude Visit.
- Select one important person from your past or present who has made a major positive difference in your life, preferably someone to whom you have never fully expressed your thanks.
- Write a one page-long testimonial. Take your time composing this. Detail exactly what that special person did and why it had such an impact on you. Thank them for their impact on your life. Try to be as specific as possible.
- Stamp, address, and mail your letter or visit the person and read him or her your letter of appreciation.
- How did this exercise make you feel? (haha, yes I know this is a typical therapist question but I couldn’t help myself and would love to hear about your experience!)
